A Harmonious Celebration at Pacific Cebu Resort International
On December 21, 2024, the Pacific Cebu Resort International in Mactan Island played host to an unforgettable evening of classical music and cultural exchange during the much-anticipated JAPAN FESTIVAL 2024. This grand charity concert, a notable expansion from last year's intimate event at the Marco Polo Hotel, stood as a powerful testament to the deepening relationship between Japan and the Philippines.
Pacific Cebu Resort International owners are intensifying efforts to recover from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and Typhoon Odette. As part of their strategy to strengthen their position in the Japanese market, they are actively bringing in experts from Japan to enhance sales and operations. This initiative reflects their commitment to providing exceptional services tailored to their key clientele as they work towards full recovery.

Enchanting Performances by World-Class Artists
The stage came alive with the mesmerizing performances of internationally acclaimed violinist Junko Chiba, a celebrated artist renowned for her extraordinary talent and dedication to music education. A graduate of the Juilliard School and a prominent member of the Kioi Hall Chamber Orchestra, Ms. Chiba brought not only her artistry but also her family’s remarkable musical prowess to the spotlight.

Joining her on stage were her daughter, Marina Wako, a prodigy and first-prize winner of the 74th All Japan Student Music Competition in Tokyo, and her son, Kento Wako, a promising young double bassist currently honing his craft at Tokyo University of the Arts. Accompanied by the accomplished pianist Akiyo Ichimiya, the ensemble delivered a spellbinding performance that captivated the audience, eliciting resounding applause and heartfelt emotion from the opening notes to the final bow.
Distinguished Guests and Strengthened Diplomatic Bonds
The evening’s significance was further underscored by the presence of esteemed guests, including Ambassador and Mrs. Endo of the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines; Consul General and Mrs. Matsuo of the Consulate General of Japan in Cebu; Ambassador Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino from the Embassy of Malaysia, both personally invited by Mr. Felipe Cruz Jr. (CEO of Pacific Cebu Resort International); and Director Judy Dela Cruz Gabato of the Philippine Department of Tourism in Central Visayas. Their attendance highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy and underscored the concert’s role as a bridge fostering ties between nations.

Giving Back Through Music
The JAPAN FESTIVAL 2024 was not only a celebration of musical excellence but also a heartfelt initiative to support underprivileged children in the Philippines. A portion of the concert's proceeds will be donated to the Seven Spirits Foundation. These non-profit organizations use music and sports to empower Filipino youth, nurturing their talents and fostering a spirit of collaboration and self-expression.

Earlier in the day, a series of master class sessions was held, with over 70 children from the Seven Spirits Foundation enthusiastically participating. The event also welcomed students from the University of Southern Philippines Foundation and Sudtunggan Elementary School. These sessions catered to both advanced and beginner students, featuring double violin classes, a single violin advanced session, and a specialized double bass class for two students. Led by Ms. Chiba and other accomplished mentors, the master classes provided hands-on instruction and personalized mentorship, inspiring participants to further develop their musical skills.

The morning event also included a joyful Christmas party for the participants, complete with lunch, gifts, and games, creating a festive and nurturing environment for the young musicians. Following the party, a calligraphy session introduced the students to the art of Japanese calligraphy, offering a meaningful cultural exchange that was warmly received by all.
These activities underscored the festival's commitment to fostering learning, cross-cultural appreciation, and camaraderie among the youth, leaving an enduring impact on the participants and their communities.
Music as a Unifying Force
Set against the backdrop of a tropical paradise, the concert provided a refreshing escape and an uplifting experience for attendees. Following the performance, a celebratory gathering allowed guests and artists to connect, fostering new friendships and reinforcing cultural ties. This seamless blend of art, diplomacy, and philanthropy reaffirmed the power of music to transcend borders and unite communities.

The JAPAN FESTIVAL Classical Charity Concert stands as a beacon of hope and goodwill, promising future events aimed at further strengthening the friendship between Japan and the Philippines.
